Carnegie Libraries in the
Bungalow/Craftsman
The Bungalow/Craftsman styles are rarely associated with civic
buildings. In California, however, four Carnegie libraries share with
bungalows their Craftsman detailing, often present in the projecting rafters
and wood columns, as well as their affinity for a milder climate, their lower
cost and smaller scale. Extant are Yolo, Riverbank, and Orosi. Santa
Cruz/Eastside, no longer extant, and Yolo were almost exact duplicates.
All were completed with grants of only $3,000, Yolo in 1918 and the other
three in 1921.
